In chapter 16, Bhagvān said that the śāstra is the pramāṇa in determining what is right and wrong and that one should act according to what śāstra says. Based on this Arjuna raises a question in the 17th chapter - ṭo what category does a person belongs if he worships with faith without scriptural knowledge . Sraddhä (faith) is of three types when looked at on the basis of the gunas, sattva, rajas, and tamas. The topic of chapter 17 is the division of the threefold sraddhä, sraddhä-traya-vibhäga-yoga. The type of sraddhä a person has is going to decide even his eating habits and a number of other things. Thus, the various manifestations of different types of sraddhä are also going to be told in this chapter.
We are indeed fortunate to have someone who is a Mahatma in our midst for one week every year. Swamiji's stature and recognition continue to grow leaps and bounds. He was designated by Pujya Swami Dayananda Saraswati to be the presiding acarya at the holy ceremony of the kumbhabhisekam of the Rishikesh ashram temple. He has been named the President of the Arsha Vidya Gurukulam in the U.S. He has authored numerous new books, including the recently published Advaita Makaranda and Drg Drsya Viveka (both will be available for purchase at the Jain Bhawan discourses). The list of his students who have taken diksha as Swamis and Swaminis continues to grow. His regular teachings at his ashram near Ahmedabad, as well as travels throughout India for public talks are inspirational. Out of the 3 months that he has agreed to visit the U.S., he has kindly carved out a week to spend with us in the San Francisco Bay Area. To study with him is to glimpse the timelessness of oneself, and to receive his gentleness and love. Swamiji is a very special person.
